TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Acupuncture is as old as 5 Element Acupuncture but was more favoured in China after the revolution because it doesn't talk of the spirit of the body and has a more 'scientific' approach. It would take a large book to give a good idea of the concept but I will try in a few sentences.

Every body is made up of Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang. The Body also has 12 organs, Heart, Small Intestine, Pericardium, Triple Burner, Spleen, Stomach, Lung, Large Intestine, Kidney, Bladder, Liver and Gall Bladder. If there is an imbalance in Qi, Blood, Yin or Yang in one of the organs then a 'Syndrome' is present. An example of a Syndrome would be; Liver Blood Deficiency or Spleen Yang Deficiency. The list goes on, there are many syndromes.

The Syndromes are first diagnosed at the initial meeting with the Acupuncturist. They can tell by asking questions, taking your pulse (both wrists), looking at your tongue and even by your smell. From these syndromes a treatment plan is devised for your course of treatment, although they have to be flexible as things change as you get better. This is why your pulse and tongue are looked at, at each treatment and sometimes during.

The lady in this picture used to be worried about needles now she knows that they don't hurt she is quite comfortable.
